Summer fete weddings have become popular over the last few years – and we can certainly see just why, taking a peek at Nick and Michelle’s sunshine-soaked, nostalgic fun fete big day!
The gorgeous couple, who now live in Shanghai, China returned to bride Michelle’s roots in beautiful Hereford to host their summer wedding at Lyde Court.
With an outdoor ceremony, vintage games and nod to their new lives in China (and love of travel), this really is one wedding that makes you forget the freezing February temperatures and gets you thinking about hazy days filled with Pimms, picnics and bike rides in the countryside.
Right, enough from us – here’s Michelle to tell us more:
Nick had intended to propose to me in Goa on our way back to the UK for Christmas but a week before we were due to fly, we realised that we’d forgotten to get visas! We ended up having to cancel our flights and managed to find a new flight home with a stopover in Rome! Nick proposed to me by the lake at Villa Bourghese which was beautiful and we were able to return to the same point during our honeymoon so forgetting our visas actually turned out rather well!
I am from Hereford. As we live in Shanghai, we wanted to get married in Hereford to make it easier for my parents to help organise.
Stag and hen do festival
As we were only back for a few weeks before the wedding we decided to have our Stag and Hen at the same festival (Latitude) with a boy camp and girl camp but we got together at different points. We wanted it to also be an opportunity to catch up with friends that we hadn’t seen for a long time which is why we chose to have it at the same venue.
We got married on the front lawn with sheep bleating in the background which was great! We hired summer fete games and a vintage caravan photo booth to keep the guests entertained while we had our photos taken. We also had a bell tent and a bonfire at the end of the night so that people could stay up celebrating for as long as they wished to.
My top tips for other brides (and grooms) to-be…
It goes so quickly – we just wish we had more time! It was very difficult to talk to everybody and we didn’t get to enjoy any of the fete games but I think everybody says the same thing about their weddings.
Bringing Shanghai to Hereford
We wanted to bring some of Shanghai to our wedding so our favours were chopsticks and incense holders as well as a few other touches! We love travelling so our tables were named after our favourite places and we made confetti cones from maps.
I made some origami paper flowers with the help of some friends and mostly my mum who made a lot! I also made some decorations, the napkin rings and the table plan. I had five weeks in the summer before the wedding so I had a lot of time on my hands!
What we enjoyed most about planning our wedding was…
Nick enjoyed planning the music the most, I enjoyed planning and making the decorations!
My least favourite part of wedding planning had to be…
Trying to make decisions, I’m very indecisive!
If we could do it all again we would…?
I would spend less time dancing and try and speak to more people!
A WOW factor wedding
The fete games and vintage caravan looked lovely and were good fun! It was also great to have the bonfire at the end of the night so that we didn’t have to finish early. Lyde Court is a stunning venue so I think that really added to the ‘wow’ factor!
